What is your current career stage and what can help you unlock your next level?
My art career is just starting this year.
I was awarded my public art commission in Riyadh this year, which I am very excited about. - Work in Progress
I am also scheduled to give my first lecture performance on the sound of Mecca at The New York Arab Festival at the end of April - (The Sound of Mecca is an effort to explore contemporary soundscapes from the holy city)
For a while now, I've been working on my own, mostly due to circumstances rather than choice. Now, I'm realizing the importance of dialogue. I think what would really benefit me is connecting with other artists who share similar goals and aspirations, whether it's about ideas, our careers, or even just on a personal level.
Why would you want to join 1833/١٨٣٣?
My priority is to be part of constructive art conversations in the region, especially amidst the current "cultural awakening" happening in Saudi Arabia, where the foundations of the art scene are still being laid. Artists now have a unique opportunity to shape the future landscape of the art scene. In 25 years, I want to look back and say I was part of that. I believe 1884 can help me achieve that.
I'm also very interested in understanding how other artists are pushing boundaries and navigating the intricacies of censorship, regulations, and societal norms within their respective fields all while staying true to their messages and themselves.
In simpler terms, I'm eager to connect more with the regional Arab artists' scene, to exchange ideas and engage in dialogue. Ultimately, I hope to play a proactive role in the cultural awakening happening in Saudi Arabia and the broader Arab world.
What are your creative interests? How do you spend your free time?
Cultural archival projects (I created @TheSambosaProject - The Sambosa Project was created to shed light on Ramadan's rich sociocultural dimensions by using the Sambosa, a common Ramadancentric pastry across the Arab world, as a medium to tell intimate stories and memories of Ramadan. In practice, the Sambosa Project was an Instagram community-based photo archive of the different kinds, shapes, and sizes of sambosas from all over the Arab world.)
Documentation of ethno-social gulf musicology and tribal folklore - (e.g. The Sounds of Mecca *details in following section*)
Urban planning - (e.g. Trees of Rawdah is an archival project intended to explore the urban-organic green cover of Rawdah neighborhood in Jeddah)
