What is your current career stage and what can help you unlock your next level?
I am an early stage researcher/ PhD student exploring online practices of control from a critical security perspective. I always identified as an artist but always struggled sharing my work, altough I am eager to collaborate with other like minded creatives that share the same vision about art and its transformative capability for the arab society.
Why would you want to join 1833/١٨٣٣?
I am not based in the UAE, however my brother is and I plan to visit him quite often. I can bring to the community my honest and critically informed understanding of art, but also I can organise and help facilitate side events in Europe where I am based (Exeter and Madrid).I can also facilitate zoom meetings and talks online about politics and art.
What are your creative interests? How do you spend your free time?
I use art as a mean to an end, paraphrasing Walter Benjamin: politisation of aesthetics instead of aesthetisation of politics. The later being a fascist tendency. I have been taking pictures and writing poetry as therapy since my young age. Parallel to that I have lived and studied in seven countries since my fifteens. When I am not doing research about critical security studies, I explore by me self methodologies from forensic architecture that I am eager to learn, I draw, paint, make collages, take pictures and write extensively poetry. So far, I only showed my photographic work once, and self-published two poetry books in a really small edition. I guess it mainly due to the impostor syndrome.
