Chef Zaid Kadhim al Salhi
Zaid Kadhim al Salhi is a 22-year-old Iraqi-Canadian chef whose diverse pursuits span across art, music, and the culinary arts. His journey through various creative fields reflects a deep commitment to pursuing what truly fuels him. In high school, Zaid found his sanctuary in ceramics and graphic design, which had a significant influence on his life. This passion for art led him to Central Saint Martins, where he studied product & industrial design while co-founding RAPDXB, a rap media company.
Zaid's journey took a transformative turn with an impulsive trip to Iraq, a place rich with personal and cultural significance. This experience, coupled with his decision to drop out of art school, set him on a new path towards culinary arts. Inspired by his mother, Raghad Al Safi, whose cookbook 'The Iraqi Table' is a culinary treasure, Zaid’s love for cooking was deeply rooted in his childhood. He vividly recalls the bustling kitchen of his family home, where he watched and occasionally assisted in the creation of some memorable dishes.
At 20, Zaid had the courage to follow his culinary passion, studying Haute Cuisine in Barcelona. He then worked at Sala Despiece in Madrid, a unique gastronomic concept that taught him the unspoken language of the kitchen, transcending linguistic barriers through the art of cooking. Returning to Dubai, Zaid launched Kleicha, a culinary venture named after the traditional Iraqi pastry. Initially focused on this beloved dessert, Kleicha evolved into a broader concept, offering a modern take on Iraqi cuisine while maintaining its authentic roots.
Zaid’s creative ventures are not confined to the kitchen. He is also making moves in fashion and music. He has launched his own clothing line challenging the concept of pockets as well as curating a cassette featuring Iraqi artists from around the world, showcasing his versatile talents and dedication to promoting Iraqi culture globally.
In every endeavor, Zaid Kadhim al Salhi remains unapologetically real, driven by passion and a desire to connect genuinely with others. His journey is a testament to the power of following one's dreams and the endless possibilities that come from embracing one's true self.
