Horrors come alive in the pages of Ahmed Saadawi’s novel Frankenstein in Baghdad. The novel is a twist on Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic masterpiece Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus that takes place during the US occupation of Iraq. It follows an eccentric, alcoholic junk dealer who creates a monster out of scavenged body parts. Saadawi’s satirical novel won the prestigious International Prize for Arab Fiction in 2014 and it was later translated to English by leading translator Jonathan Wright.
