I AM: Studio Visit With Asma Belhamar

For this edition of I AM, curated by our member Nadine Khoury, An intimate studio visit with Emirati interdisciplinary artist Asma Belhamar — a chance to see her work up close, hear about her process, and get into the ideas driving her practice: how the UAE's megastructures have reshaped our memory of the landscapes they replaced.

Nadine Khoury is a Dubai-based art advisor, curator, and writer. Of Palestinian and Syrian heritage, she grew up moving between the Gulf and North America, an experience that deeply shaped her cross-cultural perspective and approach to the arts.

Her career began in gallery management across Canada, New York, and Dubai, followed by experience at Christie’s auction house and a senior curatorial role at one of the region’s leading art consultancies. These positions allowed her to work closely with artists, collectors, and institutions, developing a nuanced understanding of both the cultural and market dimensions of contemporary art.

Today, Nadine brings this experience together throughNasij, a platform she founded to educate, guide, and nurture a new generation of art collectors and enthusiasts, with a particular focus on Arab and regional art.

About
I Am
We’re launching a new program that puts regional artists at the center, monthly studio visits, real conversations, and work experienced in the spaces it was created for.We start this January with a day trip to Al Ain: a traditional lunch, followed by a screening in Qattara Oasis. The short film by Roudhah Al Mazrouei, Klaithem Aljabri, and Alawash pulls you into the world of snaah, the red paste made from saffron, mahlep, and rosewater that shaped generations of girlhood and beauty rituals. Honest, textured, and rooted in the women who kept these traditions alive. Culture as it’s lived, not staged.‍
